“But what about brownie mixes?”, I hear you ask.
Good question.
I am not going to comment on ‘edited’ store bought brownie mixes (where you take a basic pack and then tweak/make it awesome by adding or changing things), but just on brownie mixes as they were directed by the box.
First the bad. Well, not so great. Woolworths‘ Betty Crocker (a big name USA brand). “Triple Chocolate Fudge brownie mix”. It made a passable cake. But a sub-par brownie. No photos, because you don’t need that sort of negativity in your life. We’re better than that.
Next the good. Oh, the oh so good. So good that I don’t have any photos, and made myself sick eating so many, so fast.
ALDI Australia‘s White Hill brownie mix. It was $3, and my expectations were low. But when it came out and cooled… oh. my. It was chewy and rich, and perfect in just about every way. If I was to eat an “everyday” (normal) brownie every day, this would be towards the top of my list. I could even add things to eat easily, if I wanted to make it fancy – a swirl of raspberry coulis or purée, for example. But it doesn’t need it. Pairs well with vanilla ice cream, naturally.
UPDATE: Green’s brownie mix from IGA Australia is good. When hot and fresh, it wasn’t as good as the Aldi mix, but definitely better than the Betty Crocker mix from Woolies.
Definitely worth buying.
After it’s cooled, it’s still amazingly good. Actually, even better than the Aldi’s one. Green’s has got my vote. ‘Crispy’ on the outside, soft and chewy inside. Rich, chocolately – amazingly good.
This is the premix winner! Green’s from IGA!

I tried the Donna Hay Brownie mix and thought it was great! I reheated one in the oven the following day and had it with vanilla ice cream, chewy, with a little crispness on the outside.
