Okay, this was a bit different. This is from East Timor (Timor-Leste), a bit off the beaten track from my normal travels.
On my last night in town, with the dive shop Dreamers Dive Academy (who are fantastic and lovely) – we all went to a nearby Vietnamese restaurant, ROLLS N BOWLS. It has fantastic healthy food at great prices ($8USD for a bowl, roll and drink).
They also have brownies with rocky road ice cream for $2USD. This… was interesting. They weren’t the best brownies I’ve had, judging by brownie standards. They were small, and dry.
HOWEVER. However… they were amazingly delicious. I’m not entirely sure what went into them, but there was something different. A bit of cinnamon. Cardamom? I don’t know. I had a tang and bitterness and sweetness that I just hadn’t experienced often. It had the subtle flavour notes that artisan dark chocolate has. It could have been of the best brownies I’ve ever had for that reason. But as a brownie, it fell short. As a tiny slice of chocolate cake, it was interesting and delicious.
And it was at a good price. Definitely check out if you’re ever in Dili, Timor-Leste.
